Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday said that's he's "absolutely comfortable" with married same-sex couples being granted the same rights as heterosexual pairs.
"I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties," he told NBC's David Gregory on "Meet the Press." "And quite frankly, I don't see much of a distinction beyond that." (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.)
President Barack Obama has said his position on same sex marriage is "evolving," and he supported civil unions but opposed marriage for gay couples during the 2008 campaign. Biden noted? Sunday that the "president sets the policy" and that he did not know if the administration would formally come out in favor of same-sex marriage in the president's second term should he be re-elected.
But the vice president said that attitudes about gay marriage in America are changing in favor of greater tolerance for loving homosexual partners.
"The good news is that as more and more Americans become to understand what this is all about is a simple proposition," he said. "Who do you love?? Who do you love?? And will you be loyal to the person you love?? And that's what people are finding out is what -- what all marriages, at their root, are about."
An aide pointed to the administration's efforts to challenge the Defense of Marriage Act and said that the vice president's comments only reiterated Obama's past support for "committed and loving same-sex couples."
"The vice president was saying what the president has said previously -- that committed and loving same-sex couples deserve the same rights and protections enjoyed by all Americans, and that we oppose any effort to roll back those rights," the aide said. "That's why we stopped defending the constitutionality of Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act in legal challenges and support legislation to repeal it.? Beyond that, the vice president was expressing that he too is evolving on the issue, after meeting so many committed couples and families in this country."
Section 3 is the section?defines marriage for federal purposes as between one man and one woman.
Biden, who twice ran for president before accepting the job of Obama's second-in-command, pushed back on persistent speculation that he could be replaced on the 2012 ticket by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "There's no way out.? I mean, they've already printed Obama-Biden!" he said.
And he quipped Sunday that he and one-time rival Clinton may run on a joint ticket in 2016.
"I think we may run as a team," he said, quickly noting that he was joking.
"I don't know whether I'm gonna run," he added. "And Hillary doesn't know whether she's gonna run."
Human Rights Campaign, an advocacy group for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights, said it was encouraged by Biden's comments.?Biden?"rightly articulated that loving and committed gay and lesbian couples should be treated equally," President Joe Solmonese said in a statement. DENVER (AP) ? The Denver Nuggets swore if they could just play with a lead, this first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers would be a whole lot different.
When Danilo Gallinari made a reverse layup four minutes into the game, the Lakers trailed for the first time in the playoffs and the energized Nuggets used an astonishing 28-2 run to take control in their 99-84 win Friday night.
The fresh-legged and baby-faced Nuggets can tie up the best-of-seven series Sunday night at the Pepsi Center, where the grizzled but gassed Lakers will try to rebound from a 3-for-14 fourth-quarter shooting performance that doomed their comeback attempt.
Ty Lawson scored 25 points, setting the tone offensively, and JaVale McGee and Kenneth Faried had double-doubles while stifling Andrew Bynum, who was shut out in the first half. Gallinari helped hound Kobe Bryant into a 7-for-23 shooting night.
"The game for us is all about our energy and our enthusiasm," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "It's not complicated for us. When we play poorly we don't play with enough energy, we don't push the pace and we take too many jump shots."
That wasn't the case in Game 3.
"It was a fun win for me," Karl beamed. "I can't remember a win as much as I enjoyed this thing."
Neither could McGee.
"I was real timid in the first two games and I just wanted to be extremely aggressive in this game," said McGee, who had 16 points and 15 rebounds to go with Faried's 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Together, they contained Bynum, who finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds but was shut out in the first half, when the Nuggets raced to a 41-17 lead in the second quarter.
"It was huge," Lawson said. "Every game we played against the Lakers we were down. We were down early. We were down big. We were trying to fight our way back into the game, so we made a point that we wanted to come out early and see how they did with a deficit.
"They reacted kind of well to it but we hung on."
Denver led 55-39 at halftime. The Lakers cut their deficit to four points in the third quarter but couldn't get any closer and faded in the fourth.
"That's a big hole to put yourself in, to be down 24, especially in the first half, is tough playing against a team that's desperate," Lakers coach Mike Brown said.
Bynum's putback with 1:18 left in the third quarter not only pulled the Lakers to 68-64 but his inadvertent elbow on the play broke Al Harrington's nose. He didn't return, but the Nuggets went on a 12-5 run to regain their composure and control of the game.
"I felt like they played really well," Bryant said. "They played with a lot of intensity and for us it was good learning experience. I'm proud of the way we battled to get back into the game. We just couldn't get over the hump."
Karl said he wasn't sure but suspected Harrington will be back for Game 4.
Bryant finished with 22 points after scoring 31 and 38 points in the two wins at Staples Center.
The Nuggets used a 28-2 run spanning the first and second quarters to take a stunning 38-14 lead. Lawson scored 13 of the Nuggets' points as they scored 20 of the final 22 points of the first quarter, then teamed with Corey Brewer and Harrington on a trio of 3-pointers to stretch Denver's lead to 41-17.
"Everything was going right," McGee said. "We were passing the ball the right way, we were running, everything was working."
Nothing was going right for the Lakers and their stars.
"I wasn't on my sweet spots," Bryant said. "They tried to keep me more on the perimeter. I wasn't in the post a lot. I lived at the elbow the first two games and we got away from that a little bit in the second half. Pau (Gasol) as well. We saw him on the perimeter way too much. We can't do that. We have to stick to our ground and pound game."
NOTES: Brown said he expects F Metta World Peace to be rested, not rusty when his suspension is over: "He's working hard. He's engaged. I think he'll be fine. Obviously, you never know, but he's working his tail off and he is engaged and that's all you can ask for during this period." ... Salmonella in dog food sickens 14 people in US
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Fourteen people in at least nine states have been sickened by salmonella after handling tainted dog food from a South Carolina plant that a few years ago produced food contaminated by toxic mold that killed dozens of dogs, federal officials said Friday.
At least five people were hospitalized because of the dog food, which was made by Diamond Pet Foods at its plant in Gaston, S.C., the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. No pets were sickened, according to the Meta, Mo.-based company.
"People who became ill, the thing that was common among them was that they had fed their pets Diamond Pet Foods," said CDC spokeswoman Lola Russell.
Three people each were infected in Missouri and North Carolina; two people in Ohio; and one person each in Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia, the CDC said.
"Our folks are really wanting people to be aware of it. They want to be aware that this is causing people to get sick because they may have product in their homes. For every one that is reported, there may be 29 others," Russell said.
People can get salmonella by handling infected dog food, then not washing their hands before eating or handling their own food, health officials said.
The South Carolina plant temporarily was shut down April 8. Diamond Pet Foods has issued four rounds of recalls for food made at the plant, located outside of Columbia, S.C., between Dec. 9 and April 7. The latest recalls were announced Friday.
"We took corrective actions at the plant, and today the plant is up and running. Our mission is to produce safe pet foods for our customers and their pets in all Diamond facilities," the company said in a written statement Friday.
In 2005, a toxic mold called aflatoxin ended up in food made at the same Diamond Pet Foods plant in South Carolina and dozens of dogs died. The company offered a $3.1 million settlement. The Food and Drug Administration determined the deadly fungus likely got into the plant when it failed to test 12 shipments of corn.
FDA officials were not immediately available for comment Friday on the most recent problems with the plant.
Agriculture officials in Michigan found the strain of salmonella during routine testing of dog food on April 2 and health investigators noticed there was a possible link to the food made by Diamond Pet Foods. An ill person still had some of the food, and authorities were able to link the cases to the food, the CDC said.
The recall covers a number of pet food brands made at the Gaston plant, including Canidae, Natural Balance, Apex, Kirkland, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul, Country Value, Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Premium Edge, Professional, 4Health and Taste of the Wild.

EU official: ACTA unlikely to become law
BRUSSELS (AP) ? An EU official says an international treaty that has been the subject of large protests by people fearing it would impinge on Internet freedom is unlikely to gain approval.
European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes implied in a speech Friday that ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, probably will not be ratified by the European Union.
Speaking in Berlin, Kroes said: "We are now likely to be in a world without SOPA and without ACTA," according to a transcript provided by her spokesman.
SOPA is the proposed U.S. Stop Online Piracy Act.
The spokesman, Ryan Heath, said the European Commission has not changed its position and continues to work toward ultimate ratification of ACTA, but added that Kroes was "observing political reality."

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Two Americans detained and accused of spying after hiking near the Iraq-Iran border three years ago will marry Saturday in the San Francisco Bay area.
A private wedding ceremony for Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd was set for 4 p.m. at an undisclosed location, said San Francisco attorney and family friend Ben Rosenfeld.
Bauer, Shourd and Josh Fattal, all University of California, Berkeley graduates, were arrested on July 31, 2009, and held in Iran.
Bauer and Fattal were sentenced to eight years after being convicted on spy-related charges, but were released after more than two years.
Shourd was released after 14 months on bail.
Bauer proposed to Shourd while both were in prison, fashioning an impromptu ring out of threads from his shirt.
All three say they were innocent of spying and had simply strayed across the countries' border while in the mountainous region.
Fattal will be Bauer's best man, Rosenfeld said.
No additional details about the wedding were released, but an automated response to an email inquiry from The Associated Press to Shourd said the couple would be away on a honeymoon until May 18.
They live, and will remain living in the San Francisco Bay area, Rosenfeld said, but he did not disclose where.
Shourd grew up in Southern California, Bauer is a native on Minnesota and Fattal grew up in Pennsylvania.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden says the latest job numbers show an economy still struggling to recover, but not one where hiring suddenly has stalled, which he says just might if Mitt Romney is elected.
"How is he gonna create jobs?" Biden asked in an interview broadcast Sunday. "He talks about another $2 trillion in tax cuts for the very wealthy. You're gonna create jobs? Is that how he's gonna do it?"
The appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" came a day after President Barack Obama headlined the first official campaign rallies of his bid for a second term, at college campuses in Ohio and Virginia. Obama contended that Romney was a likely "rubber stamp" for GOP conservatives, and portrayed himself as a champion of a struggling middle class.
Friday's report on April unemployment showed a continued slowdown in U.S. hiring. The economy added just 115,000 net jobs. The jobless rate slipped to 8.1 percent, but mostly because large numbers left the workforce.
Obama called the numbers "good news" overall. Romney said they were "very disappointing" and more evidence of Obama's economic failures.
"It's been steady growth, not enough," Biden said in the interview. "There's still a lot of people in trouble. But there's no stagnation."
Biden said Romney would return to policies that helped precipitate the worst economic recession in decades. He cited deregulation, deep spending cuts for education and health care, and tax cuts for wealthy Americans who "need it like they need another hole in their head."
Biden also scoffed at Romney's campaign mantra that his record as Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist qualify him to engineer an economic turnaround.
"When he was in business, how did he save companies? By piling debt on them," Biden said.
Romney maintains that in his time as top manager at Bain Capital, he helped revive and strengthen scores of major companies, and overall produced stellar results.
Also in the interview, Biden revealed a not very closely held secret: He's staying on the Democratic ticket as Obama's running mate.
"There's no way out," he joked. "I mean, they've already printed Obama-Biden" campaign materials.
Biden said he was not annoyed by speculation that he might be replaced on the ticket by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Asked which of those two is more likely to run for president in 2016, Biden said, "I think we may run as a team. I'm only joking, obviously. I don't know whether I'm gonna run. And Hillary doesn't know whether she's gonna run."
